We measure every success of our children in education by their ability to establish a balance between interest-based learning and mastery of fundamental academic instruction.
Rule #9 (Sensory Integration) of the Brain Rules by Dr. John Medina specifies that the brain absorbs more information if more of the senses are stimulated. Our children were fortunate to have been active participants in the re-enactment of the Revolutionary War, in a field trip organized by the Montessori upper elementary teachers. My older kids had a lot of textbook study done about the Revolutionary War, but after this field trip, they said they now have a better understanding of this part of the US history.
